Role: Highway Electrician

Hours: Full Time (Permanent)

Location: Bridgewater, with potential to travel further afield

Reporting to: Street Lighting Manager


About the role

J. McCann currently has opportunities available for Highway Electricians to join its growing team and work on projects across the South of England - providing an efficient and effective service to customers including delivering planned works and services.

To be successful in this role you should be able to work both as part of a team and individually and possess excellent communication and organisational skills.

The role involves working outdoors on street lighting and other highway apparatus at height, with a responsibility for operating a mobile elevated working platform. You will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of highway lighting apparatus including street lighting furniture, columns, signpost, brackets, lanterns and signs. You will also diagnose faults and complete repairs of faulty lighting columns and complete lantern replacements, lamp cleaning and change, painting and periodic testing.

What you’ll be doing:

Carrying out maintenance on all street lighting assets
- Testing and inspection with periodic inspections of installations and issue certificates
- New installations including terminations and jointing of cables
- Carrying out emergency work (including out of hours rota)
- Working safely within the vicinity of D.N.O equipment
- Deploying signage, lighting and guarding on and around the highway
- Using a locator/detector for underground services/cables

 

Whilst undertaking these tasks, you will ensure that all relevant standards are met in relation to the trade and health and safety rules, regulations and legislation. You will be required to work with minimum supervision, completing all relevant paperwork and liaising with other trades when required as well as maintain a clean and tidy workplace.


Essential Technical Competencies

Must hold a relevant Electrical qualification - C&G 2360 Parts 1 and 2 or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation
- C&G 2361, 2330 or equivalent
- C&G 2391, HEA 714 or equivalent
- C&G 6156 (NRSWA) - Units 1-3 and ideally 1-9
- HESA 210: G39/1
- Full UK driving licence with ability to drive over 3.5 tonne and up to 7.5 tonne vehicles


Desirable Technical Competencies (Training can be provided)

- IPAF 1B
- Abrasive wheel training
- Manual Handling training
- First Aid training
- Cable Avoidance Tool training
- ECS/CSCS Card
- MEWP Category 1B certificate

Role: Civils Estimator 
Hours: Full time
Salary: £50,000
Location: Nottingham  

The role:

Due to our continued strong growth across the UK, we now have a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious and talented Civils Estimator to join the McCann team, working from our Nottingham head office.

As the Civils Estimator, you will be responsible for the commercial element of the tender process including pre-contract negotiations and procurement whilst ensuring compliance with business objectives and company procedures. You will ideally have a construction/civil engineering qualification as well as several years’ experience in a similar position for a subcontractor.

What you’ll be doing:

Managing all stages of the tendering process from receipt of enquiry through to the return of completed tenders for groundworks, roads, sewers, S278 works and multi-utilities
- Reviewing submitted tender documents
- Assisting with the preparation of pre-qualification questionnaires and quality statements
- Producing bills of quantities and schedules of rates from drawings and specifications
- Take offs from drawings and generation of BoQs and Activity Schedules
- Producing enquiry documents for subcontractors and materials
- Carrying out comparisons and analysis of quotations for inclusion in tenders
- Producing competitive tenders within required timescales for submission
- Producing tender programmes
- Price projects from first principles - value of projects up to £5m
- Produce a programme in Microsoft project
- Handing over project information to site teams following award of contracts
- Attending meetings with clients, sub-contractors, senior management and other team members
- Visiting sites when necessary
- Selecting and appointing subcontractors
- Maintaining relationships with clients and the wider industry to promote further business opportunities

Essential competencies:

- At least 5 years
 experience in a similar role
- Advanced level skills in Microsoft word, excel and Project with the ability to provide a clause 31 detailed programme in Microsoft Project
- Ability to produce high quality commercial tender submissions
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise with all groups/levels of people both internally and externally
- Ability to work flexibly and manage multiple tasks
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent literacy and numeracy skills
- Ability to manage time effectively and be proactive
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Self motivated approach 

Desirable competencies:

- Degree, HNC or equivalent qualification in construction/civil engineering
- A good understanding of NEC3/NEC4/JCT suite of contracts
- Previous civil engineering, groundworks or earthworks experience
